New Chair Joanna Bircher

Since joining the Carver Theatre in 1979 at eleven years of age, the life of Joanna Bircher has been intrinsically interwoven with this Marple theatre company.

Joanna developed her acting skills as she moved through the junior troupes and acted in their productions, establishing lifelong friendships along the way and meeting her future husband, Richard, there when she was sixteen.

When taking up the post of Carver Theatre Chair, Joanna shared with the members three of the things that she values most about the Carver.

  • Joanna loves theatre, whether she is watching a production or performing in it. The stories portrayed on the stage take us away from our own lives for a while, entertaining us, making us laugh, sometimes making us cry and often giving a greater insight and understanding into ourselves and others. In her work as a GP, Joanna appreciates the added perspective and understanding this gives her when listening to her patients’ concerns.
  • Members of the Carver Theatre, including Joanna, care about the theatre itself and have a shared affinity with it, something that is very important to all of them.
  • The Carver Theatre is a community for members of the theatre itself and also for the Marple community, playing an important role in the lives of both members and audiences alike.

Whilst not being a fan of change for change’s sake, Joanna recognises just how many choices people now have for spending leisure time away from their busy lives. She feels that one of the future challenges for the Carver Theatre is “to develop flexibility to try new things that stimulate interest from both our patrons and our membership.”

One new venture for the Carver is their first Open Day, which is taking place on Saturday 1 July, 1pm-4.15pm with guided tours of ten people taking place every 15 minutes. Visitors will learn some of the Carver’s history, see part of a rehearsal, view the backstage areas and enjoy a lighting and sound demonstration. The tour will last about one hour and will end with refreshments and the opportunity to ask questions.

The Open Day is free, but tickets must be booked from Hollins of Marple, by phone on 0161 449 8363 or via the Carver website at http://www.carvertheatre.co.uk/.
