Berlie Doherty is an award-winning children’s author who has published over sixty books. She is a familiar face in the High Peak where she gives talks in bookshops, libraries and schools.

The landscape of the High Peak and the Peak District form the backdrop for many of her books: Hayfield, Eyam and Castleton all feature. ‘Joe and the Dragonosauraus’ was inspired by the farm where she lives in Edale and has just been announced as one of the books on the children’s Summer Reading Challenge run through libraries.

Blue John

Berlie’s latest book, ‘Blue John’, is for children aged between 6-8. Beautifully illustrated, it tells the story of a child created from ice and fire who is kept in the cavern by his mother, the Queen of Darkness.

‘Blue John’ is a re-working of a previous book, as Berlie recounts:

‘Blue John was commissioned by the Lyndsay String Quartet ten years ago. They wanted something that could be woven into one of their musical pieces. It was used a lot in schools, not just in literacy, but for dance and music.’
