Marple Marple Poppy Appeal Kevin Murray Marple Bridge Market Street First World War

The 2017 Marple Poppy Appeal is gaining fantastic support from all parts of the area – and the organisers couldn't be more delighted with progress.

Kevin Murray, who has taken on the role of Poppy Appeal organiser this year, says support is coming from individual volunteers, businesses and local schools.

To get the 2017 Poppy Appeal under way, some 46 large poppies will be put up in the streets of Marple and Marple Bridge on Sunday October 22.

Poppy Appeal

These are to honour the 46 local men who fell in the First World War and each poppy will bear the name of one of the servicemen. Local businesses are currently being asked to sponsor these.

Volunteers will be manning a poppy stand at the Marple Asda during the week of November 4 to 11 and there will also be a gazebo on Market Street on two Saturdays, November 4 and 11 to promote the appeal.

Local schools have been visited with a `kids pack' which features poppy designs especially for the younger generation. Poppy themed artwork from local children will be on display in local shop windows.

Kevin said: “We have also created a special poppy which we have framed. It is made up of the names of the 46 Marple men from the First World War. This will be on show at Asda November 4 to 11 and in Market Street on November 4 and 11.

“Everything is going to plan with the appeal and if anyone else would like to volunteer to help or offer sponsorship, please get in touch on 07954 388782 or email:''

A number of businesses and individuals have already sponsored the large street poppies. They are: The Review Group, Marple Website, Marple Bridge Association, Compstall Community Council, The Forces and Social Club, The Rotary Club, ACM Financial Services, Little Treasures, Stationery Supplies, Hollins Building Supplies, Inkbox, High Lane Garage, Dress Ability, Marple Health and Phil and Kay Gould -Martin.
