MEMBERS of Chinley & Buxworth Transport Group and local residents turned out in force to hand a petition to High Peak MP, Ruth George calling for better access to Chinley Station.

At the moment both platforms can only be reached by a footbridge with steep steps which makes the station inaccessible for mums with pushchairs, passengers with heavy luggage and anyone with mobility issues.

Altogether the petition contained 850 signatures and was handed over to MP Ruth George by Paul Tattam of the transport group who said: "In 2017 it is people's right to be able to get on trains and it's wrong that they should have so many obstacles getting to their station."

Because of the heavy rain the group initially met in the shelter on the platform which meant that wheelchair user, Chris Hughes, was left stranded outside the station until the rain eased and protesters and the MP were able to join him.
