Neil Deaville, 82 who had a beer named after him

A Hayfield man who holds the record as the British Legion’s longest serving Standard Bearer has had a new beer named in his honour.

Neil Deaville aged 82 was cheered as he pulled the first pint of the limited edition Standard Bearer Remembrance Ale at a special ceremony at the Royal Hotel, opened by Hayfield RBL Branch Secretary David Ash.

Neil was just 28 when he first carried the Hayfield Branch Standard at a Drumhead Remembrance Service in Glossop in 1963. Since then he has carried the flag every year bar one and attended all the village Remembrance Sunday parades and services.

This November will mark Neil’s 54th year as a member of Hayfield RBL, besides being the Standard Bearer he has also been their local welfare representative and attended numerous civic ceremonies and events on their behalf.

In order to recognise his long-standing service and dedication, Hayfield RBL in partnership with award-winning Wincle Brewery Company decided to create a new Standard Bearer beer in his honour. The cask ale is an amber beer made from a blend of classic and contemporary hops and is described as an easy drinking full-flavoured ale. It joins other unusually named craft beers from the brewery, which was established in June 2008, including Rambler, Wincle Wallaby and Old Hag.

The new brew has been given the thumbs-up by Neil who said: “I am very proud to have a beer named in my honour. It was a very good night and it was marvellous that so many people came along to the ceremony.”

The beer is on sale in the Royal Hotel, Kinder Lodge and other local outlets and over the weekend following its launch three barrels of it were sold. The more pints that beer lovers down of the new ale the better, as during October and November, 15p from each one will go to this year’s Poppy Appeal. Whilst for every barrel sold from the Wincle Beer Company £10 will be donated through the Hayfield Branch of the RBL.
