Thornsett Brass Band is very proud of its three most recent graduates. Charlotte Arnfield, Hannah Belfield-Hall and Ella Hardwick-Allan have all been playing with the band since they were around 8 years old. Now, 10 year later, they are all moving on to exciting new futures:   Charlotte has a much sought after apprenticeship at a local dental practice, Hannah is studying Engineering in Newcastle and Ella is studying French in Paris.

They all said how important playing in the band had been.  Hannah explains,  “I was never very confident and wasn't sure that university was the place for me.  Playing in the band really made me believe that I could do it, and it helped when I went for the interview as the university was really impressed that I played the tenor horn.”  Ella says, “I really liked helping the younger players and often helped out coaching in the beginners band. I put this on my CV and it helped me get a job to support my studies in Paris.”  Charlotte comments, “I just liked making music together and catching up with my friends. It's a really fun, friendly group of people.   It's also good that the band does so much for our local community.”  The band is extremely grateful for the 30 years (or more) of their time that they have dedicated to making music.  We wish them well and look forward to their guest appearances in the future.

Thornsett Band, which is based at their bandroom in Thornsett between New Mills and Hayfield, is a friendly community brass band. The band plays in many local events in Hayfield including the Hayfield Rose Queen and the Christmas Lights Switch On. They also support local charities and last year helped raise money for Blythe House at the Ferodo Christmas Market.

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings 7-9pm with a session for beginner players 6-7.   The band is looking for new younger members who would like to join. In addition the band would welcome any old brass banders who fancy having another go at playing or any adults who would like to learn.  There is free instrument loan, free beginners' sessions and free membership of the band.

Matthew Gee, musicial director, says, “It doesn’t matter what age or ability you are, there is a place for you in Thornsett Band and we will welcome you on a Monday evening.”
