Cobden Cross Appeal

By Helen Rogers on Tuesday, 10 April, 2018

Churches Together Marple are hard at work fund-raising to reach the £25,000 needed to replace the storm-damaged cross on Cobden Edge above Mellor and Marple. The current T-shaped structure will be replaced with a new, stronger cross built to much better withstand the exposed conditions at the Cobden Edge location. Over £10,000 has been raised so far, from fund-raising events and donations by individuals and groups. The cross is not just a religious symbol; it has been a familiar landmark in the area since 1970 and is missed by many people from all areas of the community, not just by churchgoers. The reasons are varied for just why the cross means such a lot to different people, as shown by these comments: “When it is impossible for us to get to the funeral of someone we know, we go to the Cross and think about the good times shared with that person.” “Although not religious, we hold dear that the Cross is there for us.” Since the original cross was erected in 1970, there has been an annual walk to the Cross on Good Friday, with stops along the way for singing and prayer. The 2018 Walk to Cobden Cross is on Friday 30 March and will start at 5.30pm from the car park at Linnet Clough Scout Camp. All ages and dogs (on a lead) are welcome. There are several ways to donate to the Cobden Cross Appeal: Online at https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/cobdencrossappeal Send a cheque payable to “The PCC of All Saints’ Marple”, write Cobden Cross Appeal on the back of the cheque and post it to Cobden Cross Appeal, All Saints’ Church Office, 155, Church Lane, Marple, SK6 7LD. Indicate if you are able to Gift Aid and include your address, so a form can be sent for you to complete. If you would like to arrange a fund-raising event, please email Marian Thompson at marian37et@gmail.com or phone her on 0161 427 7254
