Marple Marple Carnival Festival of Fiction

A host of classic storybook characters from Alice In Wonderland, tales of Beatrix Potter and other famous authors will be on parade at this month's Marple Carnival which has the theme 'Festival of Fiction'.
The scene is set for Saturday June 16 to be a fabulous day out for all the family, with an authentic German-style oompah band joining the colourful cavalcade of floats, fancy dress characters musicians and dance groups. In a year which has seen the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle break with royal tradition, Marple's Carnival 'royalty' will have its first-ever prince, with six-year-old Lucas Priestley joining the new queen Holly Crebbin, 14, and her retinue.

Marple Carnival

Marple's ever popular midsummer spectacle continues throughout the day with lots of other attractions going on in the Memorial Park. Once again, it has been made possible by the hard work and year-round dedication of the volunteer organising committee, with special thanks to Julian Wadden Estate Agents & Lettings Agents, the Carnival's main sponsor, for their continuing support.
The Festival of Fiction theme offers plenty of scope for everyone taking part in the parade. Ideas to inspire could include a swashbuckling adventure with dashing heroes and dastardly villains, a heart-warming, romantic novel, a gripping edge-of-your-seat thriller, or maybe a futuristic fantasy which is simply out of this world.
From the wonderfully whimsical world of Alice In Wonderland, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and Alice herself will be going walkabout as part of the Carnival parade and afterwards in the park with an interactive performance which you can get involved in and become part of the story.
Generations of young readers have grown up with Beatrix Potter's stories of Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddle Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, to mention just a few. but you will have to wait until June 16 to find out exactly which characters are making a special guest appearance in Marple, along with 'Miss Potter' herself!

Marple Carnival

Local community groups, organisations and individuals are invited to join the parade, which sets off from the recreation ground on Oldknow Road at 1pm. Volunteers along the route will have collecting buckets at the ready so you can show your appreciation. The generosity of Marple people has shown no bounds over the years, with the proceeds going to help many deserving local charities, schools and community projects.
Lively music always adds a little extra sparkle - no fewer than five bands are playing this year, including Yorkshire Oompah Band, from Harrogate who will be dipping into their vast repertoire of traditional German 'oompah' music and re-workings of modern classics. Adding their own cheery tunes will be local favourites Hawk Green brass band, along with Brinnington Arts and Music (BAM) community samba band, Alderley District Scout Band and Mossley Band.
Marple's firefighters will have a special parade fire engine with music and smoke and a children's fun engine. Other groups to look out for include fairytale characters from Glossop-based Once Upon A Dream Parties, Marple Cheer and Dance Academy; Signature Dance Academy from Reddish; and the 1196 (Bredbury, Romiley & Marple) Air Cadets.
The Memorial Park will be the usual hive of activity throughout the day, with all the fun of the fair, the strange sight of zorbs - giant ball-shaped capsules rolling around, songs from guitar duo Lucy and Izzy, pony rides and over 30 stalls.
Otterspool Animal Sanctuary is again organising a fun dog show with a variety of classes for you to enter your family pet.
