Liz Bexon Romiley Primary School Brass Band Reuben’s Retreat Marple and District Lions Club Brass for Reuben

Cheque presentation at Romiley Primary School - Anne Bennison Photography

Throughout the school year, Liz Bexon and her Romiley Primary School Brass Band have been raising money for their Charity of the Year, Reuben’s Retreat. As part of their fund-raising efforts, Liz joined forces with Dave McPherson of Romiley, Marple and District Lions Club to organise ‘Brass for Reuben’, an evening of varied musical entertainment. On the evening of Friday 29 June 2018, Stockport College opened the doors of its Peter Barkworth Theatre to Liz with her Band, The VariVocals choir and Marple Band.

Lion President Elect, Phil Daniels, (now Lion President) introduced the evening and The VariVocals choir began the musical programme with some (Glen) ‘Miller Magic’ and other musical treats, including their tribute to Louis Armstrong.

Nicola Graham, Reuben's mother, then spoke movingly about Reuben's Retreat and was presented with a cheque for £200 by Phil on behalf of the Lions.

Reubens Retreat

Resplendent in their new uniforms, Marple Band provided the perfect stirring finale to the evening, which included a never to be forgotten version of ‘Amarillo’ during which they were joined by members of the Romiley school’s Brass Band.

The Lions were delighted that the Mayors of Stockport and High Peak were able to join the Lions District Governor, Teresa Nickson, as their special guests at the concert and thank everyone who supported the event. Both Romiley Primary School and Reuben’s Retreat are important to the Lions who were especially proud to have been associated with this event which took place in the 100th anniversary year of the Lions Club International, allowing it to be classed as a Centennial Concert for them.

This superbly entertaining evening raised more than £700, which was added to the other money raised throughout the year by the school’s Brass Band for Reuben’s Retreat.

After 25 years of service to Romiley Primary School and local charities, Liz Bexton has now retired. A special school assembly took place on Monday 23 July to mark that occasion and to present Reuben’s Retreat with a cheque for £2258.84, the total amount raised by the school’s Brass Band during the year.
