The Glossop Guild is currently celebrating its 10th year and continues to deliver a wide range of courses.

This year the Guild has recognised the gaining of the vote by women and included various courses where women take a pivotal role and are the main focus of presentations and books.

Glossop Guild was established in 2009 and every year runs courses from the beginning of October to the end of June. Prior to this courses had been run by Derbyshire County Council's Adult Education Service and also by the Workers Education Association.

A small group of tutors and interested people initially got together and decided that an independent organisation could offer a good range of interesting courses without the need to report back regularly to a controlling body.

Ideas about how to run the Guild was sought from a sister organisation The Wilmslow Guild in Cheshire, which had been in existence for many years.

Following a good response in Glossop, the Guild has gradually grown and increased its courses and is now entirely self-sufficient.

It always endeavours to find top class speakers and tutors.

Various courses are available from a single two-hour course to a full day course and can also run on a weekly basis over anything from two to 10 weeks.

Courses cover a wide range of subjects including many local topics. Examples of recent courses have included: talks on American presidents, the dilemma of Israel and Palestine, the steam era in Glossop, the history of women's rights, earthquakes and courses on the Internet.

Organisers advise that anyone interested in classes should first consider coming to a one off class as a start. Details of all classes can be found at or obtain a brochure from Bradbury House or Glossop Library.
