Bank confirms Marple closure

Royal Bank of Scotland has confirmed it will close the Market Street Branch. In a letter to customers, the bank has confirmed the Marple branch will close in January, along with the Romiley, Disley, Hazel Grove and Chapel-en-le-Frith branches. The Stockport Great Underbank office is scheduled to close in November and Hyde has already gone.

Concert is a Roaring Success All Round

Throughout the school year, Liz Bexon and her Romiley Primary School Brass Band have been raising money for their Charity of the Year, Reuben’s Retreat. As part of their fund-raising efforts, Liz joined forces with Dave McPherson of Romiley, Marple and District Lions Club to organise ‘Brass for Reuben’, an evening of varied musical entertainment. On the evening of Friday 29 June 2018, Stockport College opened the doors of its Peter Barkworth Theatre to Liz with her Band, The VariVocals choir and Marple Band.

Jolly representatives of Stockport schools and community groups received their cheques from Chairman Ben Alexander at the Hydro on the 7th of March. A fund of £2,000 has been created through the sale of renewable energy, generated on the River Goyt at Otterspool.

A dedicated fundraiser from Marple has raised more than £2,200 for local charity Reuben’s Retreat, thanks to her green fingers.

Flower Festival in celebration of 150 years of worship at St. Martin’s

Founded in 1867 by Ann Hudson of Brabyns Hall, worship at St. Martin’s Church began in a simple corrugated iron construction, which developed over time into the St. Martin’s Church on Brabyns Brow that people recognise today. In June 2017, to mark 150 years of worship there, the church is celebrating this memorable occasion with a Flower Festival.

Hats off to ‘Ad Hoc’

Since its formation in 2011, members of local band Ad Hoc have been (not so) quietly raising money for various charities. Made up of musicians from Stockport’s Accordion Club and friends from St. Chad’s in Romiley, they are ably assisted by Mike Powell of Marple in his role as Caller. The band’s name reflects the variety of instruments the members use, including accordion, concertina, fiddle, whistle, guitar and bodhrán (an Irish frame drum).

Students at The Cheadle College and Marple Sixth Form College celebrate another year of excellent results. This year, A Level and Advanced Vocational qualification results have maintained the upward trend of success and achievement for the past five years at the College. 87 students achieved either triple distinction * on vocational courses or 3 or more A levels at A* or A.
