Shire Hill Hospital Update

Proposals have been put forward to move the intermediate care facilities offered by Glossop’s Shire Hill Hospital to Tameside Hospital. The local Clinical Commissioning Group says it will provide closer access to specialist services there. High Peak Council agreed at a recent meeting to represent local residents and ‘seek to secure the best care outcomes’.

Going ‘up yonder’ was something to dread or pity in 19th-century Glossop. ‘Up yonder’ was the workhouse, the refuge of last resort for the poor and homeless. At the workhouse you got food, shelter, basic schooling for children or work if you were fit for it, but in conditions so harsh that you went there only if you were truly desperate.
